AlmaMia Cienfuegos and Other Stories eBook Magaly Guerrero

When I go to read a free or inexpensively priced e-book, I tend to keep my expectations low. If they are simply a fun way to kill time while waiting at a doctor's office, I'm happy. AlmaMia Cienfuegos and Other Stories has shattered my expectations of e-books. This small novel manages to pack a lot of depth and meaning - more than can be absorbed than through one or two quick reads - in it's haunting narrative about Latin American tradition, culture and family legacies. You can read it simply as an enjoyable dark story - the writing style is pretty accessible and entertaining. But there is a depth to this story well worth exploring that raises it above a $.99 light read. I hope to see more by this author soon; the artistry in this satisfyingly dark story was a delight to read and I'm going to want to get another taste of it soon. I highly recommend it for lovers of the magical realism style of writing (epitomized by Gabriel Garcia Marquez) as well as people who love dark stories about magic.

AlmaMia Cienfuegos and Other Stories eBook Magaly Guerrero Reviews

Magaly Guerrero is one of my favorite authors from her books to her poetry on her Blog. I have been following Magaly for years now and enjoy everything she writes.
If you enjoy witchy tales then give this book a
You can feel the emotions and the darkness and that the struggle that is a part of each character. You are also drawn into the story from the way in which the scene is described; I almost felt like I was on the cliff edge with Mamabuela
This is a story about a little girl growing up with sister who hates her and a mean and selfish mother. But she has powerful forces on her side. They include her loving and wise grandmother, a beautiful, lush, Caribbean landscape that AlmaMia understands very well and, last but not least, AlmaMia's own developing powers as a witch. The characters in this story are full and compelling, and the story itself is fascinating. Even Vanesa and Soledad, mean and despicable as they were, interested me because Magaly Guerrero made them fully human. I want more of this tale of a young witch just starting to understand her family and her strange powers to see the dead, among other things. Magaly Guerrero will have to turn this into a novel!
I have read and re-read this little wonder over and over. Each time, another layer, another level of want unfolds for me. AlmaMia and her grandmother are authentic. Magaly writes in such a way that you not only smell the mangoes that AlmaMia is so fond of eating, but you feel it's sweet, sticky juice ruining running down your chin. Mamabuela takes you into her garden of healing and mystery until you feel that you are a part of her culture, the heritage that runs through her veins. I recommend this book and this author (she has other things in the works) with every fiber of my being!
This book captivated me. The characters came alive. I found myself so angry at AlmaMia's mother and sister that I wanted to yell at them. Out loud. I want to read more about these characters and the one's I liked, AlmaMia and Mamabuela. If you enjoy a witchy tale, give this one a read.
In every culture are the cautionary tales, the stories of the trials besetting those individuals who succumb to the base emotions that plaque mankind. In Magaly Guerrero's AlmaMia Cienfuegos A Story of Blood, Scars and Nightmares, we are introduced to the Cienfuegos family, under whose fractured veneer of civility and familial bonds lies a seething, roiling mass of conflict, abuse, jealousy, rage, and denial. At the center of the maelstrom is nine year old AlmaMia and a talisman bracelet. Made of silver and handed down through the family, the frog, the skull, and the book-shaped infuser filled with rosemary serve as a protection amulet for little AlmaMia.

Most cautionary tales provide the motivation for the characters' behavior. Ms. Guerrero, however, wisely leaves motivation to the imagination of her reader. Having read AlmaMia three times now, I still surmise, I still speculate as to the driving forces that compel Mamabuela, Vanesa, Soledad, and AlmaMia to act and react as they do. Tantalizing hints fall effortlessly into the prose and I so look forward to the next tale.

Keep a sprig of rosemary near to hand when reading the story. Slip it into your pillowcase at night. In folklore, rosemary is powerful protection. Bear in mind, though, that rosemary not only protects, it remembers. And so does AlmaMia.
Moving and intriguing collection of stories. The story of Almamia is deep and moving. The writer brilliantly depicts a complicated and delicate relationship between siblings. But it is the writer's ability to create characters with such emotional depth ― the reader goes through emotions with these characters ― that is most admirable.
What is intriguing is the magic or supernatural the writer explores, more as a tradition or gift passed on from generation to generation in this particular family. This collection is not a light read but is beautifully-crafted and unique.
